Aveiro

Some call it the 'Portuguese Venice', we call it 'Home'! Let us show you our love and pride.

Aveiro is fairly small Portuguese town located at some 75Km from Oporto and 250Km from Lisbon.

Aveiro is singular! Very different from any other place in Portugal and that’s why even so many Portuguese people visit us over and over. Saramago, the Portuguese Nobel awarded and globally acclaimed writer once described Aveiro as “A living body that binds the earth to the sea like a huge heart“.

Aveiro is famous for its central water channel that divides the city into two sides, plus, the vast number of smaller channels, gave this beautiful town its reputation of “Portuguese Venice”.

This label, of course, is something people not born in Aveiro love to use but to tell you the truth, not so many of us, Aveirenses (a person born in Aveiro), often insinuate. We like to think that Venice is Venice, and Aveiro is Aveiro, and although our waterways can’t rival with the ones at Venice (a fact), we have many other charms that are enough motivation to make you wish to visit Aveiro.

Aside from this you’ve probably heard about traditional Moliceiros and Mercantéis, our Ovos Moles (hmmm!), São Gonçalinho, the magnificent houses at Costa Nova do Prado (in fact part of Ílhavo), our paved sidewalks with Calçada Portuguesa, the old neighbourhood of Beira-Mar, the Salinas (salt production areas), Barra lighthouse (Ílhavo) and in fact, the whole ambience of the city as well as the amazingly hospitable people who live here.

We also love food and we’re right in the epicentre of so many great flavours and temptations. We already mentioned the world famous Ovos Moles, but close enough from Aveiro we have Leitão da Bairrada, Vitela Assada from Server do Vouga, a vast selection of fish and seafood, the wonderful bacalhau (codfish), and of course, the famous Caldeirada de Enguias. We can’t also forget the Regueifa, Pão de Ló (Ovar), the Pão de Vale Ílhavo (awesome bread), and of course, the Tripa de Aveiro 😀

But Aveiro has even more! Aveiro has been distinguished as the city-museum of Art Nouveau in Portugal. Aveiro is a member of the Réseau Art Nouveau Network alongside Barcelona, Brussels, Budapest, Glasgow, Helsinki, and Havana. Names like Ernesto Korrodi, Francisco Augusto da Silva Rocha, Jaime Inácio dos Santos, José de Pinho or Carlos Mendes, are associated with the city history, and in particular with the Art Nouveau landmarks.

BY LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHERS, FOR GLOBAL ENTHUSIASTS

We will guide you through more than 20 POIs, distributed among monuments and buildings, landscape, lakes, and of course, through seas of opportunities for street photography. To these “regular points of interest”, we added additional spots, special locations and hidden gems within the city, as well as some other tasty surprises and treats. Everything was carefully designed so that your whole experience of food & photography will be as rich as possible. Schedules, time of day selection, public and private transportation, admissions, tickets, food selection, etc., are all part of our responsibilities. You won’t need to invest your time in tasks other than photography and leisure.

We’ll take to all our favourite food and photo spots. Most of them ``Instagram material`` but, most importantly, very Portuguese! No tourist stuff here.

TAKE YOUR INTEREST FOR PORTUGAL AND PHOTOGRAPHY TO THE NEXT LEVEL…

We don’t just want clients! Viewpoint wants to bring together a group that shares a passion: Photography. We want to take you to locations where you can further develop your photography, and the magnificent urban and human landscape of Oporto is a great opportunity for that.

Photography is our engine and we want this to be an intense and unforgettable experience for you. If your intention is a “regular” program and the usual dozen POIS around the main tourist arteries, then, Viewpoint Tours is not the most recommended option.

  • Hotel or equivalent in a shared twin room (single supplement: 80,00 EUR/night).

Food & Drink

  • Several meals are included (3 lunches, 3 dinners, 3 breakfasts);
  • The city has a vast choice of cafés and restaurants and we’ll take you to the ones Portuguese people really like;

Additional Notes

Our local food and photo tours are designed for groups of limited size. A maximum of 12 participants plus 2 team leaders is permitted but we normally prefer smaller groups for a more personalized experience.

We’ve gathered a vast list of points of interest for foodies & photographers that result from a compilation fueled by thousands of hours of personal experiences. We’ll take to the same spots we love to shoot, to all those instagrammable POIS, but also to some hidden gems and less publicly known spots. We’ll feed you with our food and not with the food some international magazine told everyone about. We’re Portuguese (for several decades 🙂 ), and we want to impress you.

Our tours include all the typical POIs you normally read about. Don’t worry! Locations like Barra de Aveiro, Costa Nova do Prado, Estação de Aveiro, Salinas, Beira Mar, Cais dos Botirões, Pateira de Fermentelos, Praça Humberto Delgado, Sé de Aveiro, etc. are amongst a list of more than 40 POIs we have available to create several itineraries. Clichés are a cliché for a reason: people really enjoy them. However, in addition to that, we added a lot of “very special extras” that only a lot of field experience could have uncovered.

next tour will start in…

Vehicle, Insurance & Fuel

Includes transportation from/to Oporto airport (OPO), anywhere in Oporto or at any location within Aveiro. Other pick-up points may be available, but please inquire before assuming they’re available.

Besides this, we will walk! We’ll also use local public transportation and… have we mentioned we’ll walk a lot?

This kind of approach to “transportation” provides our participants with the opportunity to absorb all the magnificent atmosphere of Aveiro as well as capture all the POIs and hidden gems of the city.

Accommodation

You’ll be accommodated with another participant (individual supplement available) in a comfortable and clean room at a very well located hotel.

We always opt for highly rated accommodation so our participants can rest after a day of long walks and physical roughness.

Internet Access & Power

(outside your hotel room)

The accommodation provides free Wi-Fi access.

Food & Drinks

Food is (very much) included!

Most of our international tour don’t provide meals but our local ones provide near as much as you can get!

Let’s face it. Portuguese really like food and we love our gastronomy. We sure love all the intense flavours and aromas food can provide. We’re both a fish and a meat country. We have both a Continental and Mediterranean diet. We have a rich and delicious conventual pastry. We have great wines and an increasing number of very good breweries. We sure love coffee and we’re proud of our espressos. We love olive oil and we produce some of the best ones in the world. We have awesome cheese in the continent and islands. Our presunto (prosciutto) is second to no other and this is just scratching the surface.

Flights

Unfortunately, since August 2018, we stopped providing all flight reservation services to our clients, due to the fact that air companies have a very particular policy on receipt emission.

In the case of starting your stay in Portugal with our tours, we’ll be waiting for you at the airport to drive you to your accommodation so you can leave your bags there, or, if it’s too early for that, we’ll drive you straight to the beginning of your tour, of course, considering the fact that you’ve just  arrived. Don’t worry, we’re travellers too.

We strongly advise you to take a couple of extra days at Aveiro, Oporto or any other city, AFTER the tour. It’s much more productive this way as you can filter a lot of what you’ll see with us and also because you can take advantage of all the information you can get from us during the tour.

In the case of already being in the country, we can arrange several pick-up locations upon request. Fixed pick-up points are: anywhere within Oporto, Aveiro, Oporto airport. Please enquire for a different pick-up point. If you have any questions regarding flight booking or any other issue, please get in touch so we can help you. Our job is to make your life easier when taking your photography to the next level. We’re here for you!
